Cao-vit Gibbon on Brink of Extinction: Only 74 Individuals Remain in Northern Vietnam
Recent Developments
012023: Latest population survey published, revising population estimate to 74 individuals in 11 family groups using vocal fingerprinting technology
022022: Development of cooperatives and social enterprises for agriculture and community tourism to reduce habitat pressure
032021: First international action plan published (Cao Vit Gibbon Conservation Action Plan 2021-2030 with vision to 2050), establishing 70 distinct conservation actions
042020: Habituation of first gibbon group in Vietnam began to enable closer monitoring and research
Interventions
- Transboundary protected areas in Vietnam (Cao Bang) and China (Guangxi) with ranger patrols and community-based monitoring groups
- Habitat restoration and forest corridor establishment to connect fragmented forest patches and expand species range
- Acoustic monitoring and thermal drone surveys for accurate population tracking
- Community livelihood support programs including sustainable agriculture and ecotourism cooperatives to reduce pressure on forest resources
- Long-term scientific research and threat monitoring coordinated through transboundary conservation agreements
What Works
- Population stabilization: Conservation efforts have doubled the population over 20 years from approximately 37 individuals to 74, with no hunting or major habitat destruction in the last 15 years
- Transboundary cooperation: Vietnam-China signed transboundary agreement in 2012, enabling coordinated management across the species' entire range
- Advanced monitoring technology: Vocal fingerprinting and thermal drones provide more accurate population estimates than traditional ground-based methods, enabling better-informed management decisions
- Community engagement: Ranger patrols and community-based patrol groups have successfully prevented poaching and major habitat destruction
How to Help
- Support Fauna & Flora and other organizations working on Cao-vit gibbon conservation through donations
- Advocate for habitat protection and transboundary conservation funding with government representatives
- Promote awareness about the species' plight through education and social media
- Support sustainable livelihood programs in northern Vietnam that reduce pressure on forest resources

Manages the Ranger Station of Trung Khanh Species Habitat Conservation Area, conducting regular patrolling, gibbon population monitoring, habitat restoration, and law enforcement in partnership with NGOs to protect the last remaining Cao Vit gibbon population.
PRC Foundation partners with Fauna & Flora on transboundary Cao Vit gibbon conservation in Cao Bang Province, Vietnam. They support community-based patrol groups for monitoring gibbon populations and threat reduction, habitat restoration through tree planting, law enforcement assistance, sustainable agriculture and community tourism cooperatives to reduce habitat loss pressures in buffer zones, and implementation of the Cao Vit Gibbon Conservation Action Plan 2021-2030.
CLP funds and mentors conservation research projects for the Cao Vit gibbon in China (Guangxi), led by researcher Fan Pengfei. Their approach addresses immediate threats like fuelwood collection and agricultural conversion in karst forests by conducting field research on population status, habitat threats, and effective conservation activities to ensure long-term survival of the species in the transboundary area.
