Philippines Ocean Plastic Pollution Crisis The Philippines remains one of the world’s largest sources of marine plastic pollution. The World Bank says the country leaks **more than 0.3 million metric tons** of plastic into the ocean each year, equal to **8.8% of mismanaged plastic waste**, and it also estimates about **1.7 million tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste** are generated annually. Earlier country profiles and studies also reported that the Philippines generates roughly **2.7 million metric tons** of plastic waste per year, with about **20%** entering marine environments.
The crisis is concentrated in river and coastal systems and is closely linked to inadequate waste collection, rapid urbanization, and heavy use of single-use plastics. The World Bank identifies the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia as major contributors to ocean plastic pollution in the **East Asia and Pacific** region, while recent Ocean Cleanup activity has focused on **Manila Bay** to intercept waste before it reaches the sea. Recent secondary reporting also notes that the Philippines and India remain the top two national sources in annual ocean-plastic estimates, with the Philippines at roughly **356,371 to 360,000 metric tons** and India at roughly **126,513 to 130,000 metric tons** per year.
